How Packfire is Bringing Campfires Anywhere

There is nothing quite like the magic of an outdoor fire. But for too long, enjoying a campfire has required a massive compromise. If you wanted a "smokeless" burn, you had to buy a heavy, bulky steel drum designed to live permanently in a single spot in your backyard. If you wanted to go camping, tailgating, or to the beach, you were stuck with cheap, flimsy, or smoke-belching portable options that left you and your gear covered in soot.

That's where Packfire comes in. In just eight months since hitting the market, this innovative startup has completely rewritten the rules of campfire ambiance. By blending heavy-duty engineering with extreme portability, Packfire has created a full-sized, virtually smokeless fire pit that collapses completely flat into a backpack.

Behind this innovation is an outdoor gear legend who spent three decades redefining how we sit, relax, and gather in the wild.

The Inventor’s Spark: Thirty Years of Outdoor Comfort

Packfire’s story begins with its founder, Jeffrey Polke. In the outdoor industry, Jeff is a familiar name. In 1996, he co-founded GCI Outdoor with a childhood friend. Together, they built GCI from a door-to-door hustle into a retail powerhouse. Their breakthrough came when they invented the iconic outdoor rocking chair with a shock absorber, a product that forever changed the way people relax at campsites, sporting events, and backyards across America.

After GCI Outdoor, Jeff tried retirement. He bought a boat, played more golf, and traveled but he quickly realized he lacked a "shut-off valve".

The spark for his second act came from a longtime friend, Marine veteran and retired police officer Mark, who had developed a prototype for a wooden flower planter that folded completely flat using an ingenious latching mechanism. When Jeff saw the flat-folding planter snap down flat on a table, his decades of gear-building experience immediately saw an opportunity because traditional bulky goods waste massive amounts of space during shipping and storage. Jeff wasn't that excited about the flower planter but he thought it could be the fire pit he always wanted to come out with.

The Product Development: Designing Around Customer Pain Points

Jeff set out to bring this idea to life using an innovation philosophy popularized by Steve Jobs: consumers don’t always know what they want until they're told they want it.

Consumers had accepted that fire pits had to be massive and unyielding because nothing else was on the market. Jeff wanted to give them a premium, full-sized fire pit that they could take literally anywhere.

Before bending a single sheet of steel for the production run, Jeff’s team did something clever: they obsessively studied the one-star reviews of existing backyard fire pits on the market.

"I looked at competitor reviews obsessively," Jeff shares. "We examined every single consumer pain point and we designed around every single one of them to make sure none of those points are painful for our customers."

Traditional "portable" fire pits suffered from major issues. They were awkward to carry, took up the entire trunk of a car, were impossible to clean, and gunked up other gear with soot and grease.

By designing around those exact complaints, the Packfire Foldable Fire Pit was born.

The Innovation: A Full-Sized Fire in a Backpack

The Packfire 17" compacts down to the size of a backpack.
The Packfire 17" compacts down to the size of a backpack.

Packfire isn't just a minor improvement on existing gear; it’s an innovation in functional design:

  • True Flat-Folding Portability: The Packfire is a full-sized, 17-inch fire pit built from a premium stainless steel and aluminum hybrid. Yet, it folds completely flat and slips into an included, heavy-duty travel backpack. Weighing 35 lbs in total (27.5 lbs for the fire pit and 7.5 lbs for the pack), it easily fits behind your car seat or in the trunk of a compact car, leaving plenty of room for your other gear.

  • The 15-Second QuickDraw™ Setup: There are no loose parts, no hardware, and no complicated manuals. With the tool-free QuickDraw™ leg system, you simply unfold the unit, click the legs into place, and you are ready to light a fire in under 15 seconds.

  • Patented ClearBurn™ Airflow: Premium fire pits claim to be smokeless, but Packfire backs it up with science. Precision-engineered air vents at the base draw fresh oxygen directly under the fire, providing 30% more airflow for a faster, hotter light. As the fire burns, the patented secondary combustion system pulls rising smoke back into the flames, burning it off before it can escape—resulting in 80% less smoke.

  • Soot-Free Closet Storage: Because the fire pit folds flat and zips into a durable, airtight travel backpack, you can store it in a closet, a garage, or an RV storage bay. No soot transfers to your vehicle's interior, and no campfire odor escapes into your home.

The Customers: A Fire for Every Adventure

By removing the physical limits of where a fire pit can go, Packfire has created a whole new world of campfire experiences.

"A fire is a gathering spot... my theory is when the sun sets, the fire rises."

Packfire is designed to go wherever the adventure takes you:

  • Overlanders and Off-Grid Campers: Space is precious when you are packed for the backcountry. Packfire slides flat into cargo areas, letting you bring a warm hearth to the most remote coordinates.

  • Beach-Goers and Surfers: There is nothing like a beach fire after a surf session. Packfire sets up cleanly on the sand and packs up instantly, keeping your vehicle pristine and sand-free.

  • Van-Lifers and RV Travelers: Premium gear needs to earn its keep. Packfire takes up virtually zero floor space in an RV or van, deploying in seconds when you park for the night.

  • Urban Apartments: If you live in an apartment, rent a home, or have a small shared backyard patio, you don't have space for a permanent metal drum. Packfire lets you enjoy a beautiful backyard fire with friends, then fold it flat and tuck it safely away in a closet.

Future Plans: Expanding the Packfire Ecosystem

Packfire’s eight-month launch is just the beginning. The company has already launched a full system of innovative products to expand how you use your fire pit.

The 10-Inch Ember Tabletop Fire Pit

Packfire recently introduced the Ember. Priced at $199, this ultra-portable 10-inch tabletop version utilizes the exact same patented fold-flat technology but fits into a compact gear bag. While competitor tabletop models look and perform like "Yankee candles" and rely on wet, smoky wood pellets, the Ember is designed to burn real wood. It gives you the authentic crackle and heat of a true campfire on a tabletop scale.

Packfire has even more innovative products in the pipeline, but that'll be for our next update from the brand. Be sure to be subscribed to Digital Atlantic's Brand Spotlights to stay in-the-know with all of the coolest outdoor & adventure products!
