Gnarly Nutrition: Sports Nutrition Built for Life Beyond the Gym

Walk into the supplement aisle and you’ll find plenty of products promising better performance, faster recovery, and bigger results. For years, much of that world was built around a particular type of athlete: someone training inside a gym.

Gnarly Nutrition saw an opportunity to build something different.

Born in the mountains of Utah, Gnarly Nutrition was created for athletes whose training doesn’t necessarily end when they walk out of the gym. Skiers, snowboarders, climbers, trail runners, and mountain bikers were pushing their bodies just as hard, but the sports nutrition industry didn’t always feel like it was speaking to them.

On one side were performance supplements wrapped in aggressive branding, artificial flavors, and gym culture. On the other were more natural products that didn’t necessarily prioritize athletic performance or taste. Gnarly Nutrition’s founders believed there was room between the two.

More than a decade later, that original idea has evolved into something bigger: a sports nutrition company built around science, transparency, education, and a belief that outdoor athletes deserve products made with their pursuits in mind.

Born in the Mountains

Gnarly Nutrition’s story starts in Salt Lake City, where access to the outdoors isn’t something reserved for the weekend. Ski areas, climbing destinations, trails, and mountain biking are all part of the culture surrounding the city.

The company’s original founders were mountain athletes themselves. Skiing and snowboarding were part of that world, along with trail running, climbing, and mountain biking. According to Shannon O’Grady, Gnarly Nutrition’s current Chief Operating and Product Officer, climbing was one of the communities where the brand initially found a particularly natural fit.

That timing mattered. Outdoor athletes were beginning to think differently about what it meant to train for their sports. A climber didn’t only climb. A skier didn’t necessarily wait for winter and then hope their legs were ready. Strength training, cross-training, recovery, and nutrition were becoming increasingly important parts of staying active and performing well over the long term.

Gnarly Nutrition wanted to meet those athletes where they were. That meant creating sports nutrition products that fit into an outdoor lifestyle while giving athletes enough information to understand why they might want to use them in the first place.

When a Scientist Joined the Team

Shannon O’Grady wasn’t one of Gnarly Nutrition’s original founders. She joined the company roughly two years after it started, worked alongside the founders, and is now the longest-tenured person from that era still with the company.

Her arrival helped shape the next chapter of Gnarly Nutrition.

Shannon has a PhD in nutritional physiology and a background as an endurance athlete. Running and climbing have long been part of her life, and today she is also a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who trains and teaches regularly. That combination of scientist and athlete informs how she approaches sports nutrition.

That philosophy led Shannon to make changes to Gnarly Nutrition’s formulas, including removing proprietary blends she felt didn’t provide enough meaningful transparency. She also helped the company pursue NSF Certified for Sport certification, an independent certification process that includes testing for label claims, contaminants, and substances prohibited in competitive sports.

The certification opened Gnarly Nutrition products to another group of athletes. Professional and collegiate sports organizations began purchasing the products, including teams in professional baseball and football. Those teams aren’t necessarily the audience Gnarly Nutrition builds its identity around, but the fact that their nutrition professionals choose the products reinforces the importance of the company’s commitment to testing and transparency.

Science Without the Sports Nutrition Hype

Spend enough time researching supplements and you’ll encounter some big promises.

Gnarly Nutrition deliberately tries to stay away from them.

For Shannon, being a scientist means acknowledging not only what research says a product can do, but also what it can’t do. The goal isn’t to develop a supplement because an ingredient is trending or because a particular claim might sell more units. It’s to look at the research, determine where there is meaningful evidence, and help athletes understand how that information applies to them.

Creatine is a good example. The supplement has become increasingly popular outside traditional bodybuilding circles, but plenty of confusion remains around who should take it, what it does, and what someone should expect when using it.

Rather than simply benefiting from the increased interest, Shannon sees education as part of Gnarly Nutrition’s responsibility. The brand wants to help athletes separate research-backed benefits from misinformation and understand how products fit into their actual training.

That educational component has become increasingly important as Gnarly Nutrition’s product line has grown. More choices aren’t particularly useful if athletes don’t know which ones make sense for them.

Not Every Athlete Needs the Same Thing

One of the more interesting ideas that came up during our conversation with Shannon was the need to get more specific about who Gnarly Nutrition is helping.

A trail runner, climber, skier, and mountain biker might all use sports nutrition products, but they aren’t necessarily asking the same questions. Their training looks different, their sports place different demands on their bodies, and the way nutrition fits into their routines can vary.

That is becoming a bigger focus for Gnarly Nutrition. Rather than simply explaining what a product does, the brand wants to help athletes understand how it can fit into a particular sport.

It’s a subtle distinction, but an important one.

Someone doesn’t usually search for the best supplement for “athletes.” They want to know what could help them recover from climbing sessions, prepare for ski season, support strength training alongside trail running, or stay active in their sport for years to come.

Gnarly Nutrition wants its education to answer those questions.

What Does It Mean to Be Gnarly?

Of course, there’s another reason Gnarly Nutrition feels so closely connected to outdoor sports.

It’s right there in the name.

“Going gnarly” naturally fits the language and culture surrounding skiing, snowboarding, climbing, surfing, mountain biking, and other sports where progression often means getting a little uncomfortable.

That gives Gnarly Nutrition something many supplement companies struggle to build: a recognizable personality.

There are plenty of supplement brands that focus almost entirely on the product inside the container. That can make them accessible to an enormous audience, but it can also make it difficult to form much of an emotional connection with the company behind the powder.

Gnarly Nutrition has chosen a different path.

Shannon describes Gnarly Nutrition as more of a lifestyle brand. If you’re going to educate climbers, skiers, runners, and other athletes, she believes you need to understand their world. Outdoor communities tend to recognize quickly when a company is speaking their language without genuinely participating in the culture.

That authenticity matters when the goal isn’t simply to make a sale, but to build enough trust that someone listens when you explain the science behind what they’re putting into their body.

Gnarly Doesn’t Mean Elite

Building Gnarly Nutrition around mountain sports creates an interesting challenge.

Outdoor culture can be intimidating.

For every skier who has been on snow since childhood, there’s someone learning at 35. For every experienced climber projecting difficult routes, there’s someone tying into a harness for the first time. The same is true across mountain biking, trail running, and nearly every outdoor pursuit.

Shannon doesn’t want Gnarly Nutrition to become a brand that only speaks to the most extreme athletes.

“I don’t want the brand to feel elitist. I don’t want people to see the brand and think that our products aren’t for them.”

The goal is to preserve the personality that makes Gnarly Nutrition recognizable while welcoming people who are still finding their place outdoors. You don’t have to be a professional athlete or lifelong climber to take your training, nutrition, and recovery seriously.

That approach also reflects how outdoor athletes themselves are changing. More people are participating in multiple sports rather than defining themselves through a single activity. Someone might trail run during the week, mountain bike on Saturday, ski all winter, and strength train to stay capable of doing all of it.

Quality Over Competing on the Lowest Price

Gnarly Nutrition’s approach to product development also means accepting that it won’t always be the least expensive option on the shelf.

Shannon pointed to creatine as a useful example. At its most basic level, creatine monohydrate is creatine monohydrate. But decisions around sourcing, manufacturing, how well the ingredient dissolves, and third-party testing all affect the finished product and its cost.

Gnarly Nutrition chooses to invest in those areas rather than making price the primary point of competition.

That decision connects directly to the company’s positioning. If athletes are going to trust Gnarly Nutrition to educate them about nutrition, that trust has to extend to what’s actually inside the products. The company’s emphasis on testing and transparency isn’t separate from the lifestyle side of the brand. The two reinforce each other.

Building Sports Nutrition for the Long Run

Gnarly Nutrition started by seeing a gap between two worlds.

Mountain athletes were beginning to take strength training, recovery, and nutrition more seriously, yet much of sports nutrition culture didn’t reflect who they were. The founders built Gnarly Nutrition to bring those worlds together.

Today, the category looks very different. There are more competitors, more products, more information, and, inevitably, more misinformation. Gnarly Nutrition’s response isn’t to abandon its original positioning. It’s to become more specific about it.

That means helping a climber understand nutrition through the lens of climbing. It means speaking to skiers, trail runners, snowboarders, and mountain bikers in ways that reflect how they actually train. It means continuing to invest in testing and ingredients even when cheaper alternatives exist. And it means being willing to tell consumers when the science doesn’t support the latest big promise.

More than a decade after its founding, Gnarly Nutrition still feels like a brand born in the mountains. But perhaps the most interesting part of its story is that “gnarly” doesn’t have to mean elite, reckless, or extreme.

It can simply mean caring enough about the things you love to prepare your body to keep doing them.
