The 35-Year Journey Behind CoolCat Cooler
More than 35 years ago, Ben Rizzo ran into a surprisingly common problem while spending time on a boat: pouring drinks from a traditional cooler or jug was difficult without spilling. His solution was unconventional. He and his friends modified a pesticide sprayer to dispense mixed drinks, creating a simple way to serve beverages without having to tip the container.
The makeshift dispenser solved one problem, but created another. It wasn't insulated, which meant the drinks didn't stay cold for long. Still, the basic concept worked, and the idea stayed with the Rizzo family for decades.
From Family Idea to Real Product
In 2018, Ben's son Max Rizzo decided to take that original idea further. While studying entrepreneurship at the University of Tampa, Max teamed up with college classmate Thomas Manno to turn his father's improvised solution into a purpose-built product. What had started as a homemade contraption on a boat became the foundation for CoolCat, an insulated beverage cooler designed to make serving drinks outdoors easier and more convenient.
Turning the idea into a real product took plenty of trial and error. The team developed and tested prototypes in the United States, eventually arriving at a design that could deliver the same basic convenience as Ben's original invention while adding the features the homemade version was missing.
Today, CoolCat combines an insulated cooler with a built-in dispensing system. Instead of lifting and tipping a traditional cooler or jug, users can dispense their drinks through a hose. The current model holds two gallons, uses rechargeable battery power, and is designed to keep beverages cold while making them easier to serve.
The idea is straightforward, but that is part of what makes it interesting. CoolCat isn't simply another cooler for storing cans and food. It is designed around a different problem: how do you serve a large batch of drinks outdoors without having to constantly open a cooler, pour individual servings, or hand someone a heavy container?
Built for Outdoor Gatherings
Boating was the original inspiration, and it remains a natural fit for CoolCat. But the same problem comes up anywhere people gather outdoors. Tailgates, camping trips, beach days, golf outings, backyard parties, and sporting events can all involve serving drinks to a group, and carrying individual cans and bottles isn't always the most convenient solution.
That is where the product's origins become important. CoolCat wasn't created by starting with a list of features and looking for a problem to solve. The problem came first. Ben had already found a practical, if unusual, solution decades earlier. Max and his team simply took that idea and figured out how to build it properly.
The result is a product that feels less like a traditional cooler and more like a portable beverage station. It takes something that can be awkward outdoors- pouring and serving drinks- and makes it a little simpler.
Learning From the First Version
Developing the first CoolCat also taught the team an important lesson about product design. Max described the original product as somewhat overdesigned for its intended use. While that helped establish a high-quality product, it also meant there were opportunities to simplify how it was manufactured.
The next version is being designed around that lesson. The goal is to simplify the manufacturing process while maintaining the integrity of the original concept and the premium feel of the product.
That evolution is a natural part of taking an invention from an early prototype to something people can actually use. The Rizzo family's original setup was never meant to be a commercial product. It was simply a clever solution to a problem on a boat. Building CoolCat meant figuring out how to preserve what made that solution useful while making it durable, insulated, rechargeable, and purpose-built for outdoor use.
A Family Idea That Stuck
There is something fitting about CoolCat's history. The idea didn't disappear after Ben and his friends first experimented with their homemade dispenser. It became part of the family's story, eventually finding its way from Ben to Max decades later.
For Max, the opportunity was recognizing that the strange invention his father had been talking about for years wasn't just a funny family story. There was a real problem behind it, and a product could be built around the solution.
That is ultimately what makes CoolCat's story stand out. The company didn't begin with a complicated piece of technology or a completely new category of outdoor gear. It began with a simple observation: pouring drinks on a moving boat is harder than it should be.
More than three decades later, that observation has become a purpose-built cooler designed to make serving drinks easier wherever people gather outdoors.
Not bad for an idea that started with a bug sprayer.
