Kakadu: Bringing Australian Camping Gear to American Adventures

Some outdoor brands begin with an idea sketched on a napkin or a product built in a garage. Kakadu’s story is different. Its roots come from an established Australian outdoor company with hundreds of products, decades of product experience, and a major presence in Australian outdoor retail.

The challenge wasn’t figuring out how to make camping gear. It was figuring out which of those products made sense for American campers.

That became Nathan Hendrix’s job when he joined Adventure Operations to help bring the company’s experience into the U.S. market. Instead of introducing Americans to a collection of unfamiliar Australian brands all at once, the team created Kakadu, a single brand bringing selected products from that larger ecosystem to the United States.

Since its U.S. debut in 2023, Kakadu has begun carving out its own identity around camping, overlanding, and products designed to make spending time outside a little more comfortable.

From Australia to the U.S.

Long before Kakadu appeared at an American trade show, Adventure Operations had built a substantial outdoor business in Australia.

The company operates a family of outdoor brands and, according to Nathan, has a presence in thousands of Australian retailers. Across those brands are products spanning camping, cooking, shelter, and other parts of outdoor life.

Nathan came into the picture with his own international outdoor-industry background. He spent 13 years living in Korea and eventually joined rooftop tent company iKamper, where part of his job was helping grow the Korean startup into a global business. He later opened its U.S. headquarters before leaving the company in 2022.

Around that time, Adventure Operations approached him about a new challenge. The Australian company had a significant product catalog and retail presence at home, but it didn’t have an established U.S. operation.

Rather than bringing every Australian brand into America individually, Nathan and the Adventure Operations team decided to consolidate selected products under one name.

That name became Kakadu.

Why Kakadu?

Kakadu takes its name from Kakadu National Park, one of Australia’s largest national parks and a place that reflects the brand’s connection to its Australian roots.

Interestingly, American customers won’t find an identical Kakadu brand on Australian store shelves. Kakadu was created specifically as a way to bring selected products from Adventure Operations’ existing portfolio into the U.S. market under a unified identity.

That distinction is important to understanding the company. Kakadu may be relatively new, but many of the ideas and products behind it aren’t.

Adventure Operations has hundreds of products in Australia spread across brands including Companion, OZtrail, Campfire, and others. Instead of attempting to recreate that entire assortment in the United States, Kakadu can select products that make sense for American campers while building a more focused brand around them.

The result is something unusual for a young outdoor company: a new brand backed by years of existing product experience.

Starting With Overlanding

Kakadu officially entered the U.S. market at Overland Expo West in May 2023.

At the time, overlanding was a natural starting point. Nathan’s previous experience with rooftop tents gave him familiarity with the category, and vehicle-based adventure had developed into a major part of the American outdoor market.

Kakadu initially entered with roughly 30 to 40 products. Rather than assuming the same products that worked in Australia would automatically translate to American consumers, the team watched what gained traction and what didn’t.

They quickly learned something important.

The American overlanding market was becoming crowded. Rooftop tents, awnings, and similar products were available from a growing number of brands, making it increasingly difficult to differentiate.

One Kakadu product, however, was standing out: the Outback Shower. So Kakadu changed course.

The Product That Changed Kakadu’s Direction

The Outback Shower has become the product many American customers most closely associate with Kakadu.

The portable hot-water system is designed to bring a hot shower into places where one normally isn’t available. That makes it a natural fit for overlanding and vehicle camping, but its potential uses stretch well beyond a campsite.

Hunters and anglers can use it after long days outside. Surfers can rinse off saltwater when they return to their vehicle, particularly in places where cold weather makes a warm rinse much more appealing. Campers can use it to bring another level of comfort to a weekend away from home.

For Kakadu, its success offered a clear signal about where the brand could stand apart.

Rather than competing with dozens of companies making similar overlanding products, Kakadu could focus more heavily on products and ideas that American customers weren’t already seeing everywhere.

The product itself also wasn’t a brand-new experiment. Versions of the shower system had existed in Australia for years before Kakadu launched in the United States. Kakadu could take that established product knowledge and introduce it to a different market.

Building an Outdoor Shower System, Not Just a Shower

Kakadu has since expanded the Outback Shower into more of a system.

The brand offers a carry bag designed specifically around the shower, including details that accommodate the unit and a propane tank. Its shower tents include a dedicated bump-out designed to house the Outback Shower rather than forcing customers to adapt a generic tent to the system.

More accessories are planned as the collection grows, including products designed to create a cleaner, more complete shower setup at camp.

That ecosystem approach reflects one of the more interesting advantages Kakadu has. Instead of simply finding a successful product and stopping there, the company can think about everything surrounding the experience.

If you’re going to take a hot shower at camp, where does the shower unit go? Where do you stand? How do you keep your feet clean? How do you pack and transport everything?

The shower becomes the starting point rather than the end of the product idea.

More Than Overlanding

While Kakadu entered the United States through the overlanding world, Nathan doesn’t see the brand as exclusively for people with highly modified adventure rigs.

Camping remains at the center of the audience.

Some customers may be traveling far off pavement with an entire vehicle-based setup. Others may simply be spending the weekend at a traditional campground with their family. Kakadu’s assortment is designed to overlap those worlds.

Beyond the shower collection, the brand has introduced Australian-style ground shelters, including swags and elevated cot tents, along with outdoor furniture such as its Revive Recliner.

That gives Kakadu an opportunity to introduce American campers to products and camping concepts influenced by a market with its own long-established outdoor culture.

The goal isn’t to bring every Adventure Operations product to the United States. Nathan wants Kakadu to focus on more distinctive products that aren’t already widely available in the American market.

Bringing a Little More Comfort Outside

There’s a practical theme running through much of Kakadu’s assortment: camping doesn’t have to be unnecessarily uncomfortable.

The Outback Shower is perhaps the clearest example. You can absolutely camp without a hot shower. But after a freezing day on the water, a dusty trail, or several days away from home, having one can dramatically change the experience.

The same thinking applies to shelter and furniture.

Kakadu’s approach sits somewhere between roughing it and bringing your entire house to the campsite. The products are designed for people who still want to be outside but appreciate thoughtful equipment that makes camp more functional and comfortable.

That can mean a shower tent designed around the shower you’re actually using or a cot tent with an integrated mattress that reduces the number of separate pieces you need to bring.

The outdoor experience remains the point. The gear simply removes some of the friction around it.

A New Brand With Years of Product Experience Behind It

One of the most unusual parts of Kakadu’s story is the contrast between the age of the U.S. brand and the experience behind its products.

Kakadu itself has only been in the American market since 2023. But it isn’t approaching product development like a company starting completely from scratch.

The Outback Shower, for example, evolved from a product with a history in the Australian market. Adventure Operations can draw from products, designs, and customer experience accumulated through its broader family of brands and then decide what makes sense for Kakadu.

That doesn’t mean every Australian success will automatically work here. Kakadu’s first few years have already demonstrated the importance of adapting to the U.S. market rather than simply copying the Australian business.

Starting with dozens of products helped the team learn. Scaling back parts of the original overlanding assortment and investing more heavily in the shower category showed a willingness to follow what American customers were telling them.

Australian Ideas for American Campsites

Kakadu isn’t trying to replicate the entire Australian outdoor market in the United States. Its opportunity is more focused than that.

Adventure Operations already has an enormous pool of products, ideas, and experience to draw from. Kakadu can look at that history, identify products that solve a real problem for American outdoor enthusiasts, and introduce them through a brand designed specifically for this market.

The Outback Shower proved that strategy could work. What began as one product among a much larger launch assortment became the center of an expanding collection and helped Kakadu understand what makes the brand different.

As Kakadu grows, that may ultimately be its biggest advantage. It can be new without starting from zero.

For American campers, overlanders, anglers, hunters, surfers, and anyone else who likes getting outside without giving up every creature comfort, Kakadu offers a glimpse into a different outdoor culture and a different way of thinking about life at camp.
