Nuataaq Is Rethinking What an Outdoor Water Bottle Can Do

For something as simple as a water bottle, carrying one outdoors can be surprisingly annoying.

You can stuff it into your backpack, squeeze it into a side pocket, or hang it from a strap that feels like an afterthought. And if you've ever watched your bottle fall out of your pack halfway through a hike, you know how quickly a small problem can become a big one.

That frustration led four outdoor-minded founders to create Nuataaq around a simple question: What if a water bottle was actually designed to attach to your gear?

The answer became the Carabiner Bottle, a 34-ounce insulated stainless steel bottle with a built-in, patented carabiner. It can clip directly onto packs, bags, belt loops, and other gear. But getting there took several failed ideas, more than 25 product versions, and plenty of lessons about building a hardware company from the ground up.

An Unlikely Path Into Outdoor Entrepreneurship

Nuataaq co-founder Roscoe Swartz took a pretty unusual path into product development. He studied neuroscience and competed as a fencing scholarship athlete at Ohio State before pursuing a master's in business analytics during the pandemic. A data-scraping project for an outdoor venture eventually introduced him to entrepreneurship and set him on a new path.

Nuataaq was founded in late 2022 and launched the following October. Today, the company has four co-founders with different skills and backgrounds. That mix has helped the team deal with one of the biggest challenges of building physical products: hardware is expensive, and there is not much room for mistakes.

The First Ideas Didn't Work

Nuataaq didn't start with a water bottle. The team first explored a waterproof bag for activities like sailing and canoeing. It seemed like a good fit for the outdoors, but they soon realized the market was too small.

Next came apparel. They experimented with new materials and explored a partnership overseas, but the project brought its own challenges. In the end, the team decided it was time to try something else.

Instead of forcing an idea that wasn't working, they stepped back and looked for a better problem to solve. That eventually led them to something much more familiar: the water bottle.

Solving the Problem Hiding in Plain Sight

Water bottles are everywhere outdoors, but the way we carry them hasn't changed much. Traditional handles can be awkward, plastic straps can break, and using a separate carabiner adds another connection point that can move around or come loose.

Nuataaq saw an opportunity. Instead of finding a better way to attach a bottle, why not build the attachment right into the bottle?

After more than 25 versions of different materials and shapes, the team created the patented Carabiner Bottle. The 34-ounce bottle combines vacuum-insulated stainless steel with a forged aluminum carabiner, reinforced base, Waveform anti-slip grip, and leakproof cap.

It is built to handle long days outside, too. Nuataaq says the bottle keeps drinks cold for up to 40 hours, hot for up to 20 hours, and ice for up to five days.

Durability was also a big part of the design. Instead of making the whole bottle heavier, the team added extra steel around the base, one of the areas most likely to get damaged when a bottle takes a fall. The bottle uses 91% recycled 18/8 stainless steel, while the carabiner uses forged 7075 aluminum.

Built to Last

Nuataaq backs the bottle with a lifetime warranty. For the company, that is more than a way to give customers peace of mind. It also gives the team a standard to build toward. If you're promising to stand behind a product for life, you better make something that can take a beating.

That same "function first" mindset shapes how Nuataaq is building the business. The company has largely bootstrapped its growth with support from friends and family while keeping overhead low. The team has also spent time visiting independent outdoor retailers and building relationships directly with store owners and partners.

Where Nuataaq Goes Next

For now, Nuataaq is focused on the broader outdoor market. But the founders see plenty of room to grow into more specific communities, including rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and thru-hiking.

The patented attachment system could help the company create products designed around the way different outdoor athletes actually use their gear. Nuataaq is also exploring materials such as titanium and Tritan plastic, which could open the door to different products and price points.

The bigger goal is to build more than one bottle. It is to create a family of outdoor products that make gear more useful, durable, and easier to carry.

More Than a Bottle

Even the name has an outdoor connection. Nuataaq comes from the Noatak River in Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National Park, a fitting name for a company focused on rugged outdoor adventures.

The company also gives back. Nuataaq commits 5% of its net profits to organizations and communities affected by environmental degradation and climate change.

At its core, Nuataaq is tackling a small problem that most people have simply learned to live with. The Carabiner Bottle offers a simpler way to carry water, but the more interesting question is what the team can build around that idea next.

For a company that started with a few ideas that didn't work, more than 25 product iterations, and a founder who never planned on becoming a product engineer, Nuataaq has already come a long way.

Sometimes you don't need to reinvent the entire outdoor experience; you just need to look at something everyone uses and ask, "Why are we still doing it this way?"
