Modern screens were never designed for human biology. They were designed for engagement—engineered, in many ways, to keep us hooked. Every flicker, every flash, every endless scroll plays into the same psychology that keeps you spinning a slot machine.

“Think of a Vegas casino: no clocks, no sunlight, flashing lights—phones mirror that,” says Tristan Scott, an engineer turned wellness advocate at Daylight, a new kind of tech company taking on a big question: What if our devices worked with human biology instead of against it?

The Problem: Overstimulated by Design

The modern phone, tablet, and laptop all share the same flaw. They fight the very systems that keep us healthy and balanced—our circadian rhythms, our dopamine cycles, and our ability to focus.

“Modern screens are engineered to keep us on them. The medium itself conflicts with human biology,” Tristan explains. “We asked: how do we fix this without going off-grid? Phones are useful; the issue is environmental design.”

That phrase—environmental design—sits at the heart of Daylight’s mission. Instead of rejecting technology, Daylight is redesigning it from the ground up to be calm, usable, and restorative.

The Solution: A Screen That Feels Like Paper

The company’s first product, the Daylight tablet, looks like something out of the future—if the future had taken a healthier turn. Built around a proprietary reflective LCD display, it’s bright in sunlight yet soft on the eyes, with a paper-like texture that eliminates glare and digital harshness.

“We invented a new reflective LCD display that feels like paper but moves fast enough for modern life,” Tristan says. “It’s the best of both worlds: analog calm with digital function.”

The screen uses no constant backlight during the day, relying instead on reflected natural light. At night, a blue-free, flicker-free backlight supports healthy circadian rhythms and better sleep. It’s paired with a custom Android OS—so you can still access Gmail, YouTube, or WhatsApp, but in a calmer, newspaper-like interface.

The battery lasts for days. You can read, write, take notes, or even type with an attachable keyboard. It’s a productivity tool that feels like it belongs outdoors as much as in an office.

A Healthier Digital Experience

Tristan’s path to Daylight began after a series of concussions pushed him to study how light, electromagnetic fields, and environment affect human health. When a mutual contact introduced him to founder Anjan Katta, who had already been developing healthier display tech, it was an instant connection.

“Our mission is to list all the ways screens harm us—and solve them,” Tristan says.

That mission resonated with a growing community of users who crave focus over stimulation. Early adopters include engineers, founders, and creatives who use Daylight for reading, writing, and deep work.

There’s also a growing segment of health-conscious users seeking a “healthier iPad”—something they can use in the morning or before bed without wrecking their sleep. “Once people experience screen reduction, the value becomes obvious,” Tristan notes.

And for parents, Daylight has built Daylight Kids—a version of the tablet that encourages low-stimulation, outdoor use. “We’ve seen kids fall asleep to old cartoons on Daylight—unlikely on an iPad,” Tristan laughs.

A Tech Company with a Wellness Soul

Behind the sleek hardware and minimalist interface lies nearly a decade of R&D. Founder Anjan began the project about seven years ago, frustrated by the lack of biologically aligned screens. After five years of experimentation, Daylight launched its first product in 2024—and sold out almost immediately.

Now, the team is focused on scaling production, improving software, and expanding its lineup. A Daylight monitor is likely next, with a phone on the longer-term roadmap. The brand’s short-term focus: better software, a native keyboard case, and subtle iterations that make the experience even warmer and calmer.

But Daylight’s ambitions stretch beyond devices. “We’re an environmental design company, not just a tablet company,” Tristan says. “It’s about rethinking how we interact with light, information, and attention.”

The Future Looks Brighter (and Softer)

In a world dominated by overstimulation, Daylight’s work feels radical precisely because it’s so simple: slow down, calm the light, and let humans be human again.

“We’re a consumer hardware tech company with a health and wellness soul,” Tristan says. “That’s a unique challenge—but it’s also the future.”

As more people seek ways to reclaim their attention and protect their sleep, Daylight is proving that technology doesn’t have to fight biology. It can honor it.

And maybe, just maybe, it can help us all rest a little easier.
