Wind Power That Fits in Your Backpack—Shine Turbine is Changing How We Charge Off-Grid

Introducing the world's first portable wind turbine: Shine
Introducing the world's first portable wind turbine: Shine

For decades, portable power has been synonymous with solar. But on stormy coastlines, and cloudy campsites, the sun just doesn’t cut it. That’s where Shine Turbine comes in.

Developed by Nova Scotia-based Aurea Technologies, Shine is the world’s first truly portable wind turbine for consumer use—a sleek, three-pound device that folds into a size fit for a backpack and generates electricity wherever the wind blows. Whether you’re charging your phone at a mountaintop campsite or preparing for a storm-induced blackout, Shine offers clean, consistent power when the sun goes down.

A New Era of Portable Power

Founded by engineer Cat Adalay and designer Rachel Carr—both adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts—Shine was born out of necessity. Living in a notoriously cloudy, windy region of Nova Scotia, the team noticed a glaring gap in the off-grid energy market: while solar dominated, there was no accessible wind option. So they built it themselves.

The result? A 40W-capable wind turbine with a built-in battery, USB output ports, and the ability to double as a power bank. Setup takes minutes, and operation starts with wind speeds as low as 8 mph. Customers range from RVers and remote researchers to emergency preppers and surfers.

Two Use Cases, One Brilliant Device

Shine’s customer base falls into two camps:

  1. Outdoor adventurers—van lifers, campers, climbers, and cabin dwellers.

  2. Emergency preppers—individuals seeking reliable backup power during outages and natural disasters.

And while solar is often seen as Shine’s competitor, the brand sees it differently. “Our customers often already have solar,” says Vanessa, Head of Sales & Marketing. “But the sun isn’t always shining. Wind is a powerful complement that fills in the gaps.”

From Crowdfunding to 2.0 Innovation

The original Shine Turbine launched on Kickstarter and quickly found a loyal following. That loyal community has become a driving force behind development of Shine 2.0, now available for pre-order on Indiegogo.

Shine 2.0 keeps the same compact form factor but upgrades functionality with:

  • USB-C fast charging

  • Bluetooth app for real-time wind speed and power output metrics

  • Power station compatibility for charging devices like Jackery and Bluetti

Built for the Future of Off-Grid Living

Whether you’re preparing for hurricane season or heading out on a cross-country van trip, Shine is more than just a gadget—it ensures renewable electricity day and night, rain or shine.

And this is just the beginning.
